The Good Counsellor

Psalm 16:7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

Praise the LORD for He is our Counsellor! – God is our good Counsellor. Only God is good and can give us good counselling. The world offers temporary joy and often prescribes pills to ease the worldly pains. God cannot give us an easy ride in this life but offers us eternal life in the realm hereafter. To be a child of God is to live under God’s grace. No human is good and no human counsellor can give you the grace God can give. Jesus, as God, is our Counsellor and the doctrine he taught is contained in the Bible. As God is our Counsellor, we need to ask for His will in our lives every day. We need to communicate with God daily. Choose God as your Counsellor today. Keep the faith.

He is a good person, or not?

Mark 10:18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No-one is good – except God alone.

Praise the LORD for He is good! – Only God is good, no one else is. If you are called a “good person” then that person saying it does not know his or her Bible or are from the world. The genteel world can call you good but they do not read the Bible. Some read it, but do not understand it. Jesus was an iconoclast, attacking cherished beliefs, some of it still prevalent today. One’s pride, selfishness, greed and sinful thoughts and acts make one an imperfect human being. It is a fact that this race has sinned and will never be good in this realm. We are unable to keep the Ten Commandments, however hard we try. We need to make a u-turn, back to God who is good. There is no Christian who is good and we need to pray daily for forgiveness of sins. Born again Christians already live in a different realm, although full of sin, living under the grace of God. To be called a Christian, should be enough to convince the world that you are different, in a good way. Keep the faith.

Walk the plank

We are living in a “dog eat dog” society today, a worldwide phenomenon in my opinion. Many Organizations calling themselves Investors in People but they are hypocritically exploiting people skills to their benefit with harsh probation policies in place. In the last 200 years, not a lot has changed in human prejudice and custom, and the phrase put forward by poet Shelly in one of his letters “Are you slaves, or are you men” come to mind. Aristocrats have been replaced by harsh and money driven CEO’s who are surrounded by henchman, the afore-mentioned always ready to lecture one about how you should act and live but are paradoxically begging their banker for a bigger overdraft to finance their ever growing empire and standard of living. Let me tell you, you are only a number, they are demanding your soul, and laugh behind your back. One day they will hear: “For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat” – Many people will walk the plank one day. The people who judge you today will also be judged. Johann, I hope to have work for you one day.

People of the second chance

Praise the LORD for He is the conqueror of souls! – Jesus wants your soul and not your money or your good deeds. Many people with money, especially the philanthropists are lost forever if they do not believe in Jesus. They will be remembered on earth but not in Heaven. They are a sad case of having heard the truth but their response was a rejection of Christ. Do not be tempted to turn away from Christ, even if you feel it is too difficult to adhere to the Bible’s teachings. There are no perfect Christians and we all make mistakes daily and sin on a daily basis, for example in our thoughts and our actions or lack of action. It is hard work to be a Christian, and the phrase “No gain without pain” is especially true when you decide to leave your life of self-centredness and follow Jesus. To understand the concept of “a second chance”, you need to understand the Bible. God gives us a second chance. Make use of it. Keep the faith.

The heresy problem

Jude 1:24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy –

Jude 1:25 – to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore! Amen.

Praise the LORD for He is glorious, majestic and powerful! – The authority of man is of temporary nature, but the authority of God is forevermore. Jude wrote in particular to the Jewish Christians and in general to all other Christians. In his time he warned people about heresy, and today we acknowledge the same problem. People want to interconnect their religion with contemporary living today and the result is often the heresy religion of prosperity. Some Churches openly supports this teaching and other Churches are known for indirectly supporting this but do not admit it in public. Some people argue that hell is not hereafter, but is present, it is negative thinking’ and explain that one can with positive thinking manipulate the idea of hell. Both Jude and John warn against false teachers. We all have a duty to fight for God’s truth and must resist temptations for immoral living, gossiping and ignorance. Not the world, but only God and His presence can give us everlasting happiness. Keep the faith.

Praise the LORD for He can be trusted! – God can be trusted and is just and righteous. In Exodus 23, God sent His angel to guard His people. God said to the Israelites in Exodus 23:24-26 “Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. Worship the LORD your God, and his blessings will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.” The Life Application Study Bible states, “If you’re in the furnace, it’s easy to catch fire”. Societies and neighbors around the world have different cultures and believes, many of these being formed by history events, religion and politics. The following passage appeared in “Shelley: The Pursuit” by Richard Holmes about the UK society: “The decade (1798) saw revolutionary activities as diverse as the idealism of Bristol Pantisocracy, illicit leveller associations like the Spencean Society, and the LCS working movement for popular education and democratic rights which led to the Treason Trials of Hardy, Tooke and Thelwall. The newspapers and the taverns throughout the land were full of talk of French informers and blood-thirsty Jacobins who wishes to destroy the whole fabric of society, and the cartoonist drew huge guillotines dripping with gore and grotesque figures with mad eyes and red caps of liberty. For the first time in English history, an institution at Whitehall called the Home Office began to develop a nationwide network of surveillance, and throughout the nineties there was a steady extension of judicial controls and civilian spy systems among the ordinary people. Directed first by William Pitt, and later by his successor to the premiership Lord Liverpool, there was an increasingly rigid imposition of political religious censorship in the courts: the two great instruments of the Lord Chancellor in this respect being the twin laws of Seditious and Blasphemous Libel. One of the first things you will hear in the UK when you speak to somebody about another is the question “Can you trust him or her?” It takes many years in the UK to convince people that they can trust you. It is clear from the passage quoted above from the book “Shelley: The Pursuit” that there was an attempt to destroy the whole fabric of society in the UK and today the distrust is apparent. Many other things has happened to inflame the distrust between people, for example the closing of coal mines where father and son has turned against each other and UK children being taken away from poor families about 60 years ago and sent to Australia. The Christian life-style should be different and in contrast to the norm, different from paganism. To love our neighbor is a central value and belief of a Christian, however skew and self-centered our Christian thinking may be. We must be aware and alert to not catching the anti-social distrust ‘virus’ but reach out to our neighbor. Try to convince people that to restore the fabric of society to something wholesome and effective we need to trust each other, trying to create a big inclusive society where it is not necessary to wait patiently years and even decades to be trusted and included within the social structures. Christian lives should show that we are turning away from hypocrisy towards neighborly love, that we hate exclusiveness and the class system, and seen to be God obeying trustworthy people ready to take on a role as a moral mentor. In Deuteronomy 2:4 – 6 God said the following: “Give the people these orders: ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’” There is no question that God wants Christians to deal wisely and justly with other people and set the example. These types of actions will generate trust amongst people, societies and nations. A society where people do not trust each other is a broken one and we, as Christians need to look at the reasons for that and make adjustments to our way of life. Churches and Government to reflect an all inclusive institution, one based on vested and new morals and ideas, fair procedures, respect, humanity and trust, all free of nepotism, racism, and exploitation. These principles are lacking in many societies, making people distrust each other. This will not change unless people accept that they are sinful, distrustful, imperfect and need God and His morals and integrity to change themselves and the current work ethics of harsh and inappropriate social modus operandi. If we ignore this it will be at our own peril as well as our neighbors. Keep the faith.

No Integrity

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Praise the LORD for He is also called Jesus Christ! – Jesus is God. For a short time God was visible on earth, tangible in human form. Jesus, full of grace and truth was among mortal sinful beings. Jesus was incarnate (God united with man) and called God’s own Son (the second person of the Trinity). Jesus was also the Mediator with the gifts of the Spirit among men, performing miracles, blessings of grace, pardoning, adopting and sanctifying. Unlike men, Jesus had the truth and was full of grace. He also fulfilled the prophecies. Jesus possessed sincerity towards men and faithfulness to His Father. He was integrity personified. There is or was no man or woman on this earth with this type of integrity. We all try very hard each day to be called a person with integrity but fail dismally if we compare ourselves with Jesus. Keep the faith.

I called but they refused

Praise the LORD for He cares! – God cares and wants each of us saved and have eternal life. To be a Christian is to have regular sweet and sour experiences as part of the journey. Part of being a human and sinful is to suffer pain and hardship. We do not like pain and discomfort but it is a fact that some of us will suffer more than others and some will be tortured and some will be killed. However, God is with us all the way until our death and will listen to our prayers. Before we die in whatever way, peaceful, violently, God’s plan for us is to be good and He wants us to fulfill His mission on earth. We will receive spiritual blessings and even monetary prosperity from God and will find redemption and salvation in Christ only if we adhere to God’s true Word. In this Chapter we are also warned about false prophets. Please visit You Tube to see todays allege false prophets and make up your own mind. Take the free grace gift of salvation in Jesus Christ today so that you do not hear one day the words, standing with others, “I called, but they refused”. Keep the faith.

Anthonie went swimming this morning. Today is Karen’s last day before her 3 week leave and she is emotional and stressed. Janlou and Enya is up early and fight for a chance in front of the PC. Anthonie intervened and worked out a program for them so that each can have a reasonable time in front of the PC. Enya is now playing a game on the PC and Janlou is watching Ben 10 on TV. Anthonie discovered that the children programs re-play a lot. It does not concern the children and they will watch the same program over and over. However, they will recognise a premier and enjoy watching it for the first time. Almost all the children action cartoons are about good versus evil. It isgood to see that good always win over evil in the stories. It is debatable whether the violence in the cartoons is a good thing or not. The fact that the children want to wrestle with Anthonie after watching some of the action cartoons is indicative of the violence seen. Anthonie needs thinking what he is going to do with the children today. He will probably take them to the DVD shop . The latter rent out children DVD’s for £1 each (R11). Janlou will usually take an action movie and Enya a Barbie one. The good thing about the children movies is that you can have it for one week. Janlou is now watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

It is Friday. There are families in our neighborhood partying two or three times a week. They will probably party again tonight. These parties carry on until 3am in the mornings. It makes a good nights rest almost impossible. The noise becomes subdued if one close the double-glazed windows, but then you get that suffocating feeling having no fresh air coming into the room. The UK Government wants new build developments to reflect society. This means that the developers build one bedroom flats in neighborhoods where you can also find five bedroom detached houses. However, people in general are finding it hard to make friends in these neighborhoods. Ready-made societies such as ours often lack the essential womb-like warmth of established areas. In these areas you will generally find only three bedroom houses in one street and families living like a tribe for ages in the same street, having the same culture and outlook on live. It is my view that in ready-made societies, people does not know each other or their culture and neighborhood disputes are often the result. Many of these ready-made neighborhoods are created for rather than by the community and is very impersonal. Creating a community starts at primary school, and until school sports return to all schools, communities will never be fully involved with each other and pupils will never develop their full potential.

Like many other children, Janlou and Enya are fighting for their chance in front of the PC. One of the main games for children their age is Club Penguin. Enya is in the bathroom taking a quick bath. This regime is a daily occurence and particularly needed to get Enya awake after a midday nap. Anthonie is busy learning some english words and Karen is absent, having the duty as bread-winner to earn an income. Today is extra harsh as she needs to work overtime to enable her to take leave next week with a clear conscience and piece of mind. The riots in England is under control, the stock market out of control and the England Barbarian Cricket Team (made up of English born and South African born players), is winning the test game against India. Pietersen is on a roll and Cook is making a big score. Anthonie went swimming this morning having replaced running for swimming after his tendon injury. Anthonie is ready early in the morning for his neighbour to pick him up for a 40 minute swim.

Telling Janlou and Enya about God and the need for praying is paying off. Today at McDonald’s Enya prayed without being told to do so before eating followed by Janlou. The power of the indwelling holy Spirit has surfaced in their lives making them conscious of their Christian belief. Janlou still needs to learn that it is impertinent of a child to lecture a grownup having explained something to Karen a while ago ending with the remark “do you get it now?”. Janlou is lilting in the bath after I agreed that he could have a “long bath”. Enya, playing with sealed vitamins, asked me if she can have one. I said “no” and the irony is that she is not keen on taking vitamins or medicine. The children are much healthier since I have introduced vitamins as a food supplement. The children, having eaten most of their dinner, asked for ice cream. Down to the kitchen now.
